Otočec is a settlement that lies in the municipality of Novo mesto and had been established as a square several centuries ago. Until the middle of the 20th century its official name was Šempeter, which remains the locals’ preferred name for it.
Today, the area is an interesting tourist spot, situated in the beautiful natural environment of one of the most unspoiled parts of Slovenia and Europe along the Krka River and in the immediate vicinity of the famous island castle. The castle is surrounded by a green castle park, which was created at the end of the 18th century and is enriched by numerous autochthonous tree species, such as black alder, white willow and black poplar. The peaceful atmosphere and the vast greenness of the surrounding area are further enhanced by the sound of the Krka River. The specialty of Otočec are the animal species that reside in the river and on its embankment.
